Playroom (2024) | Native title: Ruang Masa Kecil

 

Playroom is an original piece written and narrated in Indonesian. It tells us the story of a peculiar orphan who struggles to find a sense of belonging. It is set in an unreal world, dating back to a faraway time in the past.

The main character, Kiera, has difficulty in communicating with others. This is due to the fact that she has spent most of her life as an orphan, only being briefly adopted and then promptly returned as a trail of misfortunes continuously follows her and her adoptive families. Due to the unstable conditions that Kiera has had to experience her entire life and thus having to constantly adapt to her short-lived identities, she struggles to blend in with the people around her. Her community ultimately deems her as a monster, and she spends her life trapped inside a room together with her childhood friends and memories.
